THOMASVILLE, Ga., March 15, 2004 -- The city of Cairo, Georgia, located northwest of Tallahassee, Florida, recently signed an approximately $5 million contract with USFilter Davco Products, conveniently located less than 30 miles from the municipality.

USFilter will provide a complete biological treatment system, designed for 3 million gallons per day (mgd) of influent wastewater. The existing 2 mgd system, consisting of two 1 mgd tanks, will be converted into Rim-Flow® clarifiers with Tow-Bro® sludge removers from sister company, USFilter Envirex Products. New tertiary filtration will also be installed.

Currently, the city of Cairo utilizes spraying fields for additional filtration, incorporated to meet discharge limits. However, the spraying fields are functioning improperly, and along with periodic heavy rainfall, make meeting the effluent discharge limits difficult.

"The new plant will be capable of handling peak flows of 5.5 mgd, and utilize more effective filtration for effluent polishing. This will easily combat the effluent discharge limits problem," says Rory Russo, of Heyward, Inc. (Atlanta), a USFilter representative firm.

According to David Smith, manager of the city of Cairo, "Davco has designed, and will construct, a complete biological treatment system based on our needs, utilizing our existing equipment wherever possible. We looked at several other options, but Davco Products' retrofitting and design/build experience will save us time and money."

The new system is scheduled to start-up 18 months after all approval processes have been completed.
