• Siemens signs contract to upgrade wastewater automation systems in Bialystok, Poland -- ESSEN, Germany, April, 10, 2006 -- The Industrial Solutions & Services Group of Siemens Sp.z.o.o. (Poland) has signed a contract with Instal Bialystok S.A., general contractor for modernization of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Bialystok, Poland (population 311,000). Co-financed by the European Union, the EUR1.03 million [US$1.25 million] project entails installation of automation equipment for the process control system at the plant, including new biogas recovery/reuse and sludge drying technology. • Powell River mill invests $5.5M to upgrade water treatment, cut odor -- POWELL RIVER, BC, April 7, 2006 -- This summer, Catalyst Paper will invest $5.5 million to upgrade the wastewater treatment system at its Powell River paper mill -- an upgrade expected to reduce mill odors significantly. The mill has worked for several years to reduce the odour produced by its primary clarifier, which is almost as big as a football field and was built to serve a much larger facility. The wastewater treatment system uses a primary clarifier to separate liquids and solids and a secondary treatment system to remove biodegradable solids. Bacteria in the primary clarifier create a "rotten egg" smell as they digest the effluent. Reducing the odour will mean converting one of the mill's smaller, secondary clarifiers to replace the primary clarifier. Detailed engineering has begun and the project will be complete in October...

• PaDEP announces expansion of abandoned mine cleanup program -- CASS TOWNSHIP, PA, April 7, 2006 -- A multi-county initiative set up to address the long-standing problem of large, illegal dump sites in the anthracite coal region is expanding into Schuylkill County. Clean Up Our Anthracite Lands and Streams (COALS) is a partnership among the coal industry, environmental groups and local, county and state governments. The initiative was developed in Columbia and Northumberland counties after a December 2004 tour of illegal dumpsites on county and coal company properties. Using a multi-faceted approach, which includes recycling, education, enforcement and innovation, DEP has developed a coalition of committed partners to direct and fund the COALS program. The initiative currently has more than $250,000 for cleanup and disposal activities on abandoned mine land areas. Funding is administered by PA Cleanways, a statewide environmental organization that focuses on dumping and littering education and cleanups...

• Senate Democratic Policy Committee to examine if Halliburton failed to provide clean water to troops in Iraq -- WASHINGTON, DC, April 6, 2006 -- The Senate Democratic Policy Committee (DPC) was to conduct a second oversight hearing on Halliburton's failure to deliver clean water to U.S. troops fighting in Iraq on April 7, in Room 138 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building. At the hearing, Chairman Byron Dorgan (D-ND) said he intends to release, for the first time, an internal Halliburton report documenting that the company knew -- despite its subsequent denials -- that it was failing to test and treat water that U.S. troops in Iraq used to bathe, shower, shave, and brush their teeth. Dorgan said that he will also release, for the first time, a report by a U.S. Army doctor that confirms that Halliburton provided troops with contaminated water -- even after the DPC highlighted the problem in a January 2006 hearing. In the most recent incident, Halliburton employees allowed the troops to shower and bathe in concentrated waste water pumped from the Tigris River that tested positive for both E. coli and coliform bacteria. Witnesses at the hearing will include one of the world's leading water quality experts, who will testify about the risks to the troops who were exposed to the water, and Iraq War veterans, who will describe their efforts to obtain information about the contaminated water. A former Army captain will describe health problems that he suffered after exposure to the contaminated water at Camp Ar Ramadi in Iraq...
