ITT hits million milestone with Goulds 3196 pump
SENECA FALLS, NY, April 10, 2006 -- Today, Goulds Pumps, a subsidiary of ITT, announced the shipment of the one millionth ANSI Process Pump—proving that the 3196 pump model continues to be the industry standard after 45 years.

Introduced in 1961 as the original Goulds 3196 ANSI Standard Dimension Process Pump, this pump model evolved quickly into the top selling pump of its kind worldwide. It continues to be recognized as a workhorse in chemical, petrochemical, pulp and paper, primary metals, food and beverage and general-industry processes. As proven by shear numbers and numerous brand choice studies, the Goulds 3196 is the most popular pump in the world.

Today, Goulds ships thousands of 3196 pumps each month from its manufacturing facilities in Seneca Falls, NY; Axminster, United Kingdom; Choongbuk, Korea; Hidalgo, Mexico and Shanghai, PRC.

• Model 3196: The original ANSI pump is available in 29 different sizes with a wide range of ANSI PLUS™ features for handling difficult applications. The X-Series power ends provide standard features for improved bearing and mechanical seal life.
• Model HT 3196: ANSI High Temperature Process Pump. Centerline mounted in a heavy duty fabricated steel casing support, this pump is designed for high temperature applications in the chemical industry. The Model HT 3196 minimizes shaft misalignment and piping strain associated with elevated temperatures up to 700°F.
• Model LF 3196: Low Flow ANSI Process. Designed for low-flow chemical processes, this pump features a concentric (circular volute) casing and open radial vane impeller to eliminate hydraulic and mechanical problems at low flows.
• Model CV 3196: Non-Clog ANSI Process. Able to handle bulky, fibrous or shear-sensitive liquids, this model features the Goulds concentric volute casing with recessed impeller design. It provides non-clog pumping with minimal solids degradation. In addition, the CV 3196 has the capacity to handle liquids containing 10 to 20 percent air or gas.
• Model 3796: Self-Priming ANSI Process. This model provides self-priming services for chemical process industries. Its one-piece casing eliminates the need for separate priming chamber, air separator, valves or bypass lines.
• Model 3996: In-Line ANSI Process. Designed for in-line chemical processing, this model features TaperBore™ PLUS and BigBore™ seal chambers with precision fits for accurate alignment. With its fully open impeller, back pull-out design and sturdy construction, the 3996 is designed for corrosives, abrasives and high temperatures.

"Since 1961, the 3196 series has been the flagship pump not only of our company but also of the entire industry," said Patrick Prayne, Product Manager - ANSI Pumps. "With so many installations around the globe, we're confident in calling this model the most popular process pump in the world."

Emerson's Micro Motion SIS Coriolis flowmeters safety certified -- World's first to meet IEC 61508 standards -- BOULDER, CO, April 10, 2006 -- The smart Safety Instrumented System (SIS) from Emerson Process Management, an extension of PlantWeb® digital plant architecture, is now further enhanced with TUV certification of its Micro Motion® SIS Coriolis meters. This certification allows users to boost plant availability by using the flow and density measurement technology in systems up to SIL-3 loops, per IEC 61508. The IEC certification reduces costs by eliminating costly documentation and analysis efforts associated with the alternative prior-use methodology of certification. Plant designers can now take advantage of the established reliability and intelligence embedded in these certified products to simplify new SIS designs and compliance management. The meters integrate into a comprehensive Emerson solution for SIS that includes the DeltaV™ SIS system with smart logic solvers, final elements such as Fisher® FIELDVUE® SIS digital valve controllers, and Rosemount® SIS pressure and temperature transmitters...

New LA ad campaign insists consumers don't need extremes to save water, money -- Comical "Don't/Do' TV, radio campaign promotes availability of consumer rebates -- LOS ANGELES, April 7, 2006 -- How far would you go to save water? What about sipping from a neighbor's sprinkler or washing dishes while bathing? A humorous $1.5 million advertising campaign being unveiled on TV and radio April 10 by the Metropolitan Water District and the Family of Southern California Water Agencies maintains consumers don't have to go to those extremes to save water and money. The intensive two-month campaign suggests different ways to conserve water by contrasting the ridiculously absurd with the sublimely simple in advertisements that promote the availability of consumer rebates for water-saving fixtures and appliances. The advertisements juxtapose measures like drinking from a fish tank against more practical water-wise methods such as cashing in on rebates for "smart" sprinkler controllers, dual-flush toilets and high-efficiency clothes washers. The messages, which also appear in magazines, call on consumers to access rebate information by logging onto the "bewaterwise.com" website...

Powell River mill invests $5.5M to upgrade water treatment, cut odor -- POWELL RIVER, BC, April 7, 2006 -- This summer, Catalyst Paper will invest $5.5 million to upgrade the wastewater treatment system at its Powell River paper mill -- an upgrade expected to reduce mill odors significantly. The mill has worked for several years to reduce the odour produced by its primary clarifier, which is almost as big as a football field and was built to serve a much larger facility. The wastewater treatment system uses a primary clarifier to separate liquids and solids and a secondary treatment system to remove biodegradable solids. Bacteria in the primary clarifier create a "rotten egg" smell as they digest the effluent. Reducing the odour will mean converting one of the mill's smaller, secondary clarifiers to replace the primary clarifier. Detailed engineering has begun and the project will be complete in October...

Senate Democratic Policy Committee to examine if Halliburton failed to provide clean water to troops in Iraq -- WASHINGTON, DC, April 6, 2006 -- The Senate Democratic Policy Committee (DPC) was to conduct a second oversight hearing on Halliburton's failure to deliver clean water to U.S. troops fighting in Iraq on April 7, in Room 138 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building. At the hearing, Chairman Byron Dorgan (D-ND) said he intends to release, for the first time, an internal Halliburton report documenting that the company knew -- despite its subsequent denials -- that it was failing to test and treat water that U.S. troops in Iraq used to bathe, shower, shave, and brush their teeth. Dorgan said that he will also release, for the first time, a report by a U.S. Army doctor that confirms that Halliburton provided troops with contaminated water -- even after the DPC highlighted the problem in a January 2006 hearing. In the most recent incident, Halliburton employees allowed the troops to shower and bathe in concentrated waste water pumped from the Tigris River that tested positive for both E. coli and coliform bacteria. Witnesses at the hearing will include one of the world's leading water quality experts, who will testify about the risks to the troops who were exposed to the water, and Iraq War veterans, who will describe their efforts to obtain information about the contaminated water. A former Army captain will describe health problems that he suffered after exposure to the contaminated water at Camp Ar Ramadi in Iraq...
