COLUMBIA, MD, March 5, 2007 -- Shimadzu Scientific Instruments Inc. (SSI) announced on Feb. 25 at Pittcon in Chicago the transfer of the X-ray spectrometer business from Kratos Analytical, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shimadzu Corp., to SSI. Effective April 1, SSI will handle sales, service, and technical support for current and future customers of Shimadzu's X-ray spectrometers in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Product groups involved in this transfer include the Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) Series, the X-ray Diffraction (XRD) Series, and the Wavelength Dispersive X-Ray (WD-XRF) Series.

A main focus for SSI will be the bench-top EDX-720, which combines the latest high count-rate electronics with intelligent software that stops measurements when the signal reaches the proper statistical threshold. The EDX-720 is equipped with new, specialized filters and enables users to perform analysis at parts-per-million (ppm) levels without sample pretreatment. At this level of performance the EDX-720 can be used for regulatory compliance (e.g. RoHS and ELV) and/or quantitative analysis and monitoring processes.

"Acquiring the X-ray business further enhances our spectroscopy product line, giving customers a wider range of solutions to address their application requirements," stated Bob Clifford, PhD, Product Manager. "In particular, for those companies addressing RoHS and other regulatory requirements, the addition of the EDX provides companies with a single-source instrument supplier to meet their screening and quantitative requirements."

Shimadzu Scientific Instruments Inc. (www.ssi.shimadzu.com) is the U.S. subsidiary of Shimadzu Corp., which has headquarters in Kyoto, Japan. Founded in 1875, Shimadzu is a $2 billion multinational corporation with three major divisions: Medical Diagnostics, Aerospace/industrial, and Analytical Instruments. The Analytical Division is one of the world's largest manufacturers of analytical instrumentation and environmental monitoring equipment. In 1975, SSI corporate headquarters was established in Columbia, Maryland, to provide analytical solutions to laboratories in North, Central, and parts of South America. In the United States, SSI has a network of more than 50 locations providing local and regional sales, service, and technical support. The U.S. headquarters are based in Columbia, MD.
