ANTOFAGASTA, Chile, May 19, 2011 -- TaKaDu will deploy its water infrastructure monitoring solution for the city of Antofagasta in Chile, the company's first deployment in the Latin American market.
The water utility Aguas de Antofagasta supplies water to the city of Antofagasta and the copper mines that surround it, which are the core of the local economy. With the region's desert climate and water-intensive mining industry, water scarcity is a challenge. As a result, the utility desalinates most of its water supplies.
Marco Kutulas Peet, General Manager of Aguas de Antofagasta, believes this technology "can make a positive impact on the water supply and economy of the region." The utility's key goals are reducing water loss, operating more efficiently and improving quality of service and water continuity.
Water infrastructure monitoring will help the utility gain better control of its network with real-time knowledge and alerts about leaks and other problems in its water distribution infrastructure. It uses existing meter and sensor readings and uses advanced algorithms to detect, alert and accurately identify network events, such as leaks, bursts and other inefficiencies.
"Better management of the network can reduce our energy costs, and help us meet greater water demand while ensuring optimal use of our water," he said.
