ARCADIS recognized by IWA for successful stormwater management in New Orleans

ARCADIS was the inaugural recipient of the International Waters Association Executive Director Prize for Impact at Scale award during the bi-annual Project Innovation Awards for their work in New Orleans.

HIGHLANDS RANCH, CO, Nov. 14, 2012 -- ARCADIS (EURONEXT: ARCAD), the international design, consulting, engineering and management services company, was the inaugural recipient of the International Waters Association (IWA) Executive Director Prize for Impact at Scale award during the bi-annual Project Innovation Awards for their work on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) Greater New Orleans Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System (HSDRRS). The award was presented earlier this fall at the IWA’s World Water Congress held in Busan, South Korea.

ARCADIS worked as part of a joint venture on components of the USACE’s HSDRRS to reduce risk to areas of New Orleans and surrounding parishes hard-hit in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina, from future storm events. One of the highest profile components of the HSDRRS was the West Closure Complex Pump Station, a facility with 11 specially designed pumps each powered by a 5,000 HP diesel engine each weighing over 70 tons. The enormous size and complexity of the pump station required unique design and fabrication. The volume of water moved by one of these pumps could fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool in less than five seconds, providing a significant first-line of defense from hurricane storm surge for the more than 250,000 residents and industrial businesses along the Harvey and Algiers canals.

The team in New Orleans worked diligently to complete these projects on time, and when Hurricane Isaac battered the Gulf Coast, we saw the risk reduction systems in action, performing as engineered to provide a first line of defense for the city of New Orleans.”

Other major components of the USACE’s HSDRRS include the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal (IHNC) Seabrook Sector Gate Complex, a 95-foot-wide navigable sector gate and two 50-foot vertical lift gates used for flow control; the IHNC Lake Borgne Surge Barrer, a 1.8-mile-long barrier that will reduce storm surge from the Gulf of Mexico from flooding Orleans and St. Bernard parishes; the Lake Pontchartrain and Vicinity Bayou Dupre Control Structure, a 43.5-foot-tall, 56-foot-wide sector gate; and 23-miles of levees and floodwall in St. Bernard’s Parish together with a closure gate system.
