Jan. 4, 2013 -- The Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) of Bangladesh has approved a project to supply clean drinking water through pipelines in 45 municipalities of seven divisions in the country.

The project, named 'Environmental Sanitation and Water Supply with Piped Network in Thana Sadar and Growth Centre Pourasabhas' aims to provide drinkable water to all the residents living in the 45 municipalities.

The BDT2.6bn ($32.5m) project was approved in the presence of Bangladesh Prime Minister and ECNEC chairperson Sheikh Hasina.

Under the project work, the Public Health Engineering Department (DPHE) will set up 240 experimental tube-wells, 120 production tube-wells, 120 pump houses and construct 27 water treatment plants.

DPHE will also build 755km of pipeline, 14,420 house pipeline connections and 155 toilets as a part of the project work.

The department will implement the project work during July 2012 to June 2015.

The ECNEC also hopes that the project will reduce the chances of people getting affected with water-borne diseases and diarrhea.

Apart from this project, the ECNEC has approved six development projects at a total cost of approximately BDT12bn ($150m).
