Iraqi Ministry of Municipalities and Public Works has awarded a 170 million euro contract to provide pre-treatment facilities for its 200,000 m3/day desalination plant awarded earlier this year.
A consortium between Hitachi and Veolia Environnment will provide EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) for river water intake and transport facilities) for the Basra reverse osmosis (RO) project.
In January this year the Iraqi ministry contracted Veolia to build and operate the desalination plant over five years (see WWi story).
Egyptian firm ArabCo will assist the consortium with the facilities, together with a loan assistance from the Japanese government.
Jean-Michel Herrewyn, senior executive vice president, global enterprises, Veolia, said: “This plant, which combines pretreatment, high-level membrane filtration and desalination, will significantly improve the quality of drinking water provided to the city of Basrah and will eliminate spikes in salinity caused by tides and winds.”
