A US$120 million contract has been awarded by the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) for the expansion of the Shuaiba Phase 2 desalination plant in Saudi Arabia.

Japanese engineering companies Itochu Corporation (14.9%) and Sasakura Engineering (35.1%) will work in a joint venture with ACWA Holding (50%) to deliver the 91,200 m3/day multi-effect distillation with thermal vapor compression (MED-TVC) project.

“Greater water volume” and “energy saving performance” were quoted by Itochu in a statement as reasons for the Japanese firm winning the bid, announced back in June 2013.

Towards the end of last year ACWA Power was awarded Phase two of the Barka desalination project in Oman (see WWi article).

Last week SWCC signed an agreement that was reported could reduce a reliance on external suppliers and would promote Saudization (watch newscast).
