New aerobic granular sludge technology to be implemented at South African WWTP

The East Rand Water Care Association of South Africa has issued a tender to Johannesburg-based WEC Projects to implement Royal HaskoningDHV's wastewater treatment technology Nereda at the Hartebeestfontein Wastewater Treatment Works.

AMERSFOORT, THE NETHERLANDS, April 24, 2015 -- The East Rand Water Care Association (ERWAT) of South Africa has issued a tender to Johannesburg-based WEC Projects, an engineering, procurement and construction contractor, to implement Royal HaskoningDHV's wastewater treatment technology Nereda® at the Hartebeestfontein Wastewater Treatment Works, located near the East Rand region.

Royal HaskoningDHV, an international engineering and project management consultancy, is providing the Nereda system -- a new aerobic granular sludge technology that purifies wastewater by controlling the growth and formation of microorganisms -- to improve the capacity of the Hartebeestfontein facility by 5 ml/day.

Nereda was invented by the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and developed in a unique public-private partnership between the University, the Dutch Foundation for Applied Water Research (STOWA), the Dutch Water Boards, and Royal HaskoningDHV.

"The technology represents the next level in the evolution of water treatment technology," said Nereda Global Director, Rene Noppeney. "Aerobic granule treatment is the next technology and is here to stay. The great benefit of Nereda is that it is proven in practice, also in South Africa. It requires less spaces and resources, uses much less energy and involved no chemicals."

Graham Hartlett, WEC Projects sales and marketing manager, added, "When this project came out on tender, we immediately recognized that it would be an excellent match for the Nereda technology. The advantages of being able to use the existing infrastructure added much value to the client. Nereda technology can be deployed on a smaller footprint. Capital and operational costs are also big factors to consider."
