May 28, 2015 -- The board of directors for WateReuse (WR), a global organization for applied research, education and advocacy on alternative water supply development, recently approved funding for 13 new research projects valued at nearly $6 million. The projects represent a broad spectrum of issues all designed to improve the treatment, distribution and acceptance of recycled water.
Nine of the new projects are funded under the WR Research Foundation's Principal Program, which means research contractors will be selected through a competitive process. Four of the projects are funded under the Tailored Collaboration (TC) program, which allows Foundation members to propose and receive funding for research.
WR is investing $1.5 million in Principal projects and $460,000 in TC projects, and the balance of the funding comes from in-kind support. Eight of the projects are funded through the Direct Potable Reuse (DPR) Initiative, an ongoing effort to advance DPR as a water supply option. The remaining research projects address industrial reuse, agricultural reuse, desalination, and regulatory issues.
Accordingly, WR will establish a technical peer review committee for each new project, and requests for proposals will be released for the Principal projects later this year. Technical experts interested in supporting the peer review of the new projects can submit an application to the Research Foundation.
