May 29, 2015 -- To commemorate World Environment Day (WED) 2015, taking place Friday, June 5, Dow Water & Process Solutions, a specialist in sustainable water separation and purification technologies, has highlighted in a new infographic (here) the need for responsible water consumption amid ongoing water scarcity across the nation and around the globe today.

This year, WED's main theme is "Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care." Over 100 countries will celebrate the event with the goal of raising awareness around careful consumption to ensure a healthy future where the price for human prosperity is not the Earth. Likewise, Dow is dedicated to the development of new technologies -- and their management -- to ensure more sustainable production processes as well as lower costs.

One of the most significant challenges affecting the environment is the intrinsic relationship between water and energy -- in that one is needed to produce the other -- often called the Water-Energy Nexus. The Water-Energy nexus is one of the most compelling societal challenges to be resolved for ensuring sustainable development, and, if not managed efficiently by optimizing the consumption of these resources, it can have a severe impact on the environment.

Some of the most prominent technologies developed by Dow to support the environment include reverse osmosis (RO), such as DOW FILMTEC™ SEAMAXX™ and DOW FILMTEC™ ECO, which allow the removal of minerals from brackish water or desalination of seawater, while producing the same amount of high quality freshwater and reducing energy consumption by up to 30 percent -- an important step closer to addressing the issues generated by the Water-Energy Nexus.

Likewise, ultrafiltration technology, such as DOW INTEGRAFLO, assists in RO pre-treatment in processes including drinking water production, but also treatments such as wastewater purification. With freshwater sources rapidly depleting, working to identify new ways to reuse water to produce more freshwater is an important step towards achieving a more responsible consumption.
