VOORHEES, NJ, June 15, 2015 -- American Water (AW), the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, recently announced that it has received 29 Partnership for Safe Water awards. Two plants are receiving a Presidents Award, one plant is receiving a Phase-III Directors Award of Recognition, one plant is receiving an award for maintaining Phase-III certification for five years, 23 plants are being presented with the Phase-III Directors Award status for 15 years, and two systems are being presented with Phase-III Directors Award for Distribution.
Nationally, just over 400 surface water treatment plants are part of Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Partnership for Safe Water Program, a voluntary effort designed to increase protection against microbial contamination through treatment optimization. AW accounts for about 20 percent of the participating plants nationwide and has received more Partnership for Safe Water awards than any other utility nationwide. As a member of the Partnership for Safe Water, the company demonstrates its commitment to improve the quality of drinking water delivered to customers by optimizing system operations.
Pennsylvania AW's Clarion Water Treatment Plant and Norristown Water Treatment Plant, for example, have received the elite Presidents Award recognition. Phase-IV goals are the highest possible level of performance that can be achieved in the four-phase program. The Presidents' Award recognizes achieving Phase IV's very stringent individual filter performance goals for turbidity. Pennsylvania AW's facilities have been participating in the Partnership since 1996; it now has three surface water treatment plants that have received the Phase-IV Presidents Award.
AW's Contract Services Group was recognized with its first Phase-III Directors Award of Recognition for its North Brunswick Water Treatment Plant in New Jersey. AW accounts for approximately 30 percent of the plants receiving the program's Phase-III Director Award. Likewise, West Virginia AW's Kanawha Valley Water Treatment Plant was recognized for maintaining the Phase-III Directors Award status for five years. With a total of 64 surface water treatment plants recognized, AW accounts for about one-third of all plants that have received the Five-Year Phase-III award nationwide.

American Water accounts for approximately 45 percent of the plants receiving the Fifteen-Year Phase-III Award. AW's Military Services Groupwas recognized with two Phase-III Directors Awards for Distribution for the water distribution systems it manages for Fort Sill, Okla., and Fort Hood, Texas.
