Moulton Niguel Water District customers remove 4-million square feet of turf

LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA, AUGUST 24, 2016 -- In the midst of an ongoing drought and record-high temperatures, Moulton Niguel Water District (MNWD) customers took action to help reduce water use, particularly outdoors where up to 70 percent of water is used.

Four million square feet of turf – equivalent to the size of Vatican City – was removed in the MNWD service area. The amount of turf removed in the MNWD service area since the program’s inception in 2011 represents approximately one-fourth of all turf removed in Orange County.

"We are thrilled to see that the largest amount of turf removed in all of Orange County came from MNWD customers," said District Board President Donald R. Froelich. "This is reflective of our customers understanding the urgent nature of these drought conditions and their commitment to reducing their outdoor water use."

The Turf Rebate Program is designed to encourage residents and commercial customers to convert their lawns to California friendly, drought-tolerant landscapes, which can help save up to 40 gallons of water per square foot of turf removed per day. The District currently offers a rebate of up to $2 per square foot for qualifying residential, commercial and public agency projects.

In addition to rebates, MNWD also offers landscape workshops to provide in-depth training on water-wise landscaping – from evaluating and designing your site, selecting the most appropriate plants, to managing your irrigation properly. The next workshop will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 9:00 a.m. – noon at the District’s headquarters in Laguna Niguel.
