FLINT, MI, JUNE 14, 2017 -- The head of Michigan's health department, Nick Lyon, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter for his role in the Flint water crisis. Lyon is one of 15 current and former state and local officials facing criminal charges as a 17-month investigation into Flint’s tainted water supply continues.
The Huffington Post reported Lyon is now officially the highest-ranking state official charged in connection with the lead in drinking water issue.
A total of 12 deaths have been linked to Legionnaires' disease following an outbreak during the crisis which began in 2014. These deaths are the only officially-linked deaths related to the crisis.
The state attorney general continues to investigate the lead crisis and more charges are expected to be filed.
