Monitoring systems

Hach's new Disinfection Control Solution brochure illustrates how water utilities can meet appropriate surface and groundwater regulations by applying in-facility water quality analyses throughout the process. Information from these analyses lets operators adjust processes to optimize removal of organic material, control disinfectant dosing, and limit formation of disinfectant by-products, all while meeting coliforms limits and containing chemical costs.

ATI's new Model A15/79 Monitor measures Total Residual Chlorine using a gas phase measurement method that eliminates any contact between the sample and the sensor, greatly reducing maintenance requirements. In operation, a sample is reacted with buffer and potassium iodide in accordance with EPA recommended methods. Iodine released by residual chlorine in the sample is stripped from the sample using an air stripping column and the iodine is measured using a gas sensor.

On-Site disinfection

Klorigen™ on-site generators (OSG) are constructed of approved materials. Their electrolytic membrane cells generate high purity chlorine gas and sodium hydroxide. The raw materials required are salt, water and power. The principal advantage of the membrane cell is its efficiency and ability to separate the gas from the liquid. At one atmosphere the chlorine gas is educted directly into the treatment water flow. The production of chlorine gas is controlled through the power input. The co-product in this process is 15% concentration membrane-grade sodium hydroxide, which may be used for pH balancing and odor control. In some applications the value of this co-product completely offsets the cost of generating the chlorine gas.

Testing services

BioVir Laboratories provides MS2 Bacteriophage and Bacteriophage testing services for disinfection and filtration system challenge studies. Because it reduces the costs and drastically shortens the turn-around-time for a virus challenge study, Bacteriophage (typically MS2) is requested by regulatory authorities more and more frequently as a surrogate for animal virus. Other benefits to using Bacteriophage are that higher numbers of organisms (1014) can be produced relative to animal virus, no known health risk exists and MS2 is very stable.
