The Town of Saugerties, NY, recently completed installation of a 16-inch isolation valve on an 1880s vintage, out-of-round cast iron pipe. Once the site was prepared, installation was completed in approximately four hours.

The project was designed to replace an existing 16 inch isolation valve at the town's water treatment plant, said Joe Bisignano, Water Superintendent for the Town of Saugerties.

Installation of the EZ Valve system typically takes about four hours, once the site is prepared.

The replacement valve was provided by Advanced Valve Technologies. The company's 16" EZ Valve has a unique design that features a built-in temporary gate that is an integral part of the main valve casting. With this design, the installer can either leave the Bonnet or remove it when the installation is over. The valve can serve as a temporary line stop or as a shutoff valve.

Even though the installation was performed in inclement weather, the job went off without a hitch, Bisignano said.

"We had the 16-inch pipe exposed and shoring done to (the company's) specs and had a local crane service standing by. During the time of the installation, it rained over 1 inch in 8 hours. Kevin and his crew stayed with it and did a professional job with the extreme inclement weather," Bisignano said, referred to Kevin Murphy of Advanced Valve Technologies.

After the installation was completed, staff at the Saugerties plant shut off the water and ran off the 3 million gallon tank to clear out turbid water.

"In the morning, we came in and found 40 inches of water in the clearwell. The filters had to be backwashed. We shut off our new EZ Valve and started up the plant with our one clean filter," Bisignano said. "The filter filled the clearwell in minutes. We backwashed all filters and opened up the new EZ Valve and let the water run into the distribution system."

The valve system has a ductile iron body and stainless steel fasteners. It meets AWWA C 509-01 and C 515 Material Standard Valve. For more information, visit the company's website at www.avtfittings.com.
