Padre Dam Municipal Water District was awarded $6 million from the State Water Resources Control Board as part of the San Diego Integrated Regional Water Management grant provided by Proposition 84 (Prop 84).
In addition, Padre Dam received $200,000 from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation for researching options for maximizing water production.
The money will be used to expand Padre Dam’s Ray Stoyer Water Recycling Facility so that it is able to accommodate additional wastewater for the East County Advanced Water Purification Program.
In 2014, Padre Dam opened its Advanced Water Purification Demonstration Facility (read WW article). The demonstration facility takes recycled water from the water recycling facility and treats it using four advanced water purification steps.
Additionally, Padre Dam has partnered with Helix Water District, City of El Cajon and the County of San Diego to study the feasibility of expanding the water purification program to enhance water reliability for East County.
“The money from Prop 84 couldn’t have come at a better time,” said Allen Carlisle, CEO and general manager of Padre Dam. “Currently, our water recycling facility treats two million gallons of wastewater per day. The amount of recycled water produced needs to be increased to create an additional water supply for Padre Dam and its project partners. The six million dollars from Prop 84 and funds from the Bureau will be used to expand and upgrade our Ray Stoyer facility so it can produce the additional water.”
Funding for the San Diego IRWM grant program is provided by Proposition 84 - the Safe Drinking Water, Water Quality and Supply, Flood Control, River and Coastal Protection Act of 2006. This grant program is administered and implemented by the Regional Water Management Group. The RWMG is comprised of the San Diego County Water Authority, City of San Diego and County of San Diego
Padre Dam received $200,000 for its Advanced Water Purification Program from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation under its Desalination and Water Purification Research Program.
“The East County Advanced Water Purification Program could ultimately produce up to 13 million gallons of water per day for our region,” added Carlisle. “Additionally, it will give residents in Padre Dam Water District, Helix Water District, City of El Cajon and areas of San Diego County a new source of water that is safe, reliable, locally controlled and drought-proof.”
