The Skikda desalination plant in Algeria has reached the milestone of producing 200 million cubic meters of drinking water since the start of operation.

The 100,000 m3/day plant, one of the first desalination plants built in the country, has been in operation since March 2009.

Desalinated water is supplied as drinking water to the city of Skikda, as well as feed water for the local petrochemical complex.

Despite suffering two losses caused by adverse weather conditions, the Abengoa Water facility hit the production level using reverse osmosis technology.

The Spanish company has two more desalination plants in Algeria, Honaine and Ténès, with a capacity of 200,000 m3/day each, and both with Skikda supply a population of two and a half million people in the country.

Honaine started its operation in September 2011 and Ténès in June of this year. Skikda and Honaine are owned by Abengoa through its subsidiary Abengoa Yield.
