HONG KONG - A contract to extend the San Wai Sewage Treatment Plant in Hong Kong and operate the plant for 10 years, with a possibility of a five-year extension, has been awarded to SUEZ in partnership with ATAL Environmental Engineering and China Harbour Engineering Company.

The 15-year contract is worth a total of €353 million, of which SUEZ’s share is approximately €99 million.

Awarded by the Drainage Services Department of Hong Kong, the aim of the project is to enhance the wastewater treatment capacity of the existing plant – located in the Northwest New Territories – to meet the needs of a growing population and increased urban development in the Yuen Long area.

Chemically-enhanced pre-treatment with degremont technology Densadeg, followed by ultraviolet disinfection will be added to the process.

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2020, at which time the San Wai Sewage Treatment Plant will have a maximum peak capacity close to 500,000 m3/day compared to its current daily capacity of 164,000 m3/day.

The San Wai Plant project follows a previous contract awarded in 2010 to build and operate the Pillar Point Sewage Treatment Plant (550 000 m3/day), currently in operation.

Jean-Louis Chaussade, CEO of SUEZ, said: “We developed with our partners a compact technical solution to overcome the issue of limited land in Hong Kong. This project underpins our aim to leverage on SUEZ’s worldwide experience and advanced technology to deliver tailor-made environmental solutions and services to the city.”

SUEZ has been providing water and waste management services in Hong Kong for 30 years.
