Reverse osmosis membrane manufacturing to double in Germany, commits LANXESS

COLOGNE, Germany – Chemicals company LANXESS will double the production capacity of its reverse osmosis (RO) manufacturing site in Bitterfeld to meet demand.

The company has been involved in the RO membrane market for five years and to date has invested40 million euros into manufacturing.

The additional capacity is scheduled to come on line in the second half of 2017, creating 10 new jobs.

The market for RO membrane elements is currently projected to grow at an above-average rate of 10% annually in coming years (CAGR 2015-2020).

Prior to launching its RO membranesto the market, the German firm conducted tests in Egypt, which concluded the elements met industrial standards (read WWi story).

Since opening the production plant in Bitterfeld, LANXESS has cooperated with technical universities and other research facilities in the region such as the Fraunhofer Institutes for Factory Operation and Automation (IFF) in Magdeburg and for Microstructure of Materials and Systems (IMWS) in Halle.

Jean-Marc Vesselle, head of the LANXESS Liquid Purification Technologies (LPT) business unit, said: “Our foray into the reverse osmosis membrane business five years ago has truly been a success story. We have almost reached the limit of our current capacity so we are going to double production capacity in the coming year.”
