MUSCAT, Oman – The Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) has announced a tender to provide “Technical Advisory Services” for its plans to increase water and power supply.

The project covers the contracting of future power and related water capacity, tied in with a broader push in the country to secure supplies by 2022.

Oman is aiming to increase its overall desalinated water capacity under contract to OPWP to 1.3 million m3/day by 2020 (read WWi story).

News has also emerged this week that Oman’s first gas-fired power generation and water desalination plant at Al Ghubra will be fully retired by Q3 2018.

Featuring seven multistage flash (MSF) units, providing 185,000 m3/day, the phasing out of the plant demonstrates the transition from thermal-based desalination to membranes in the region.

The water supply has been replaced by an independent water project (IWP) using reverse osmosis modules on a site adjacent to the old Ghubra plant, completed in late 2015 (read WWi story).

The bid submission date for the technical advisory services is October 26th and the tender announcement can be seen here.
