SURREY, UK - British engineering company Biwater has expanded a $152 million project with the Cameroon Water Utilities Corporation (Camwater) by $14 million.

The original contract covered the refurbishment and extension of water supply infrastructure to address acute ongoing potable water shortages across 13 locations in Southern Cameroon (read story).

This included the provision of a water asset management (WAM) programme to improve network efficiencies and project sustainability.

The supplemental contract, bringing the project total to $166 million, incorporates additional scope to increase security of water supply and storage for Mundemba and Bertoua.

Other notable additions include the supply of power to sites, costs for project supervision and the appointment of an independent engineer.

Environmental and social impact assessments (ESIAs) and public consultations are underway and financial close is scheduled for the first quarter of 2017.

An Export Credit financial package is being arranged by Biwater to cover the entire project, subject to the necessary due diligence.

“There is an urgent need for water across Central and Southern Cameroon and Camwater are committed to addressing local needs. We are taking on additional responsibility and increasing the contract scope to guarantee that works are progressed on a fast-track basis once financial close has been reached,” said Giles Jackson, Biwater’s regional director for Africa.
