LONDON, England - The former president of the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), has been awarded an MBE for delivering outstanding services to the environmental and professional services.

Margaret Patricia Stuart Henton has over 40 years of extensive experience in the environmental sector, including being the director of environment and business at the Environmental Agency, the chief executive of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and her dedication over the years to numerous charities and environmental bodies.

These include being the former Chair of Defra’s Regulatory Agencies Strategy Board, Trustee of the Geological Society of London and Trustee for European Environmental Policy.

An MBE, defined as Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, is an award given by the Queen to an individual for outstanding services to the community.

She said: “Over the course of my working life I have had the immense good fortune to contribute to environmental protection in a very positive way. During my term as President I helped to take forward and consolidate the thinking on sustainable development within CIWEM's areas of interest.

“Whilst much has been achieved, I do fear that the current total lack of political enthusiasm and understanding of its importance and that of a healthy, functioning environment is taking us backwards just at the time when action on issues such as climate change is crucial. “
