ABU DHABI, UAE – In a bid to upgrade its water network, the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (FEWA) will be adopting smart water meters.

FEWA, who provides more than 300,000 customers in the Northern part of the United Arab Emirates with electricity and water, signed an order for 30,000 intelligent water meters from Danish metering company Kamstrup.

Installation is expected to begin in September, with themetersproviding data to help detect leakages faster, collect information about the network and detect tampering.

Danish Fareed, general manager of Kamstrup Middle East, UAE, said: “The high accuracy of the meter ensures precise billing of the consumption, and the technology makes the consumers capable of following their consumption even closer.”

Earlier this month FEWA announced plans to increase its desalination project roster to help meeting increasing water demand.

Utilities are being driven to adopt smart water systems, including meters, as a result of non-revenue water, aging infrastructure and quality concerns.

Data from Navigant Research showed that as the costs of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and automated meter reading (AMR) fall over the next decade, the affordability of the technology is expected to drive market growth, notably after 2023.
