Water Solutions & Technologies unit, won two design-build contracts by SIAAP, the wastewater authority for Paris, worth €224.1 million.
As leader of the consortium for both projects, it will be in charge of bringing the 1.7 m3/day Seine Aval WwTP in Achères into compliance with the EU’s Urban Wastewater Directive. Veolia also will execute the second section of the Seine Grésillons WwTP in Triel sur Seine to triple the plant’s capacity and bring it into compliance with the EU Framework Directive and French Water Act. In other news, Veolia Water AMI won the first-ever private operator contract, worth €40 million, from Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Water & Electricity for water production, distribution and wastewater in Riyadh. Lastly, Veolia ES Industrial Services Inc. acquired Pacific Liners, a full service pipe and sewer line restoration company, founded in 1993 in Vacaville, California, USA.
Severn Trent Services awarded further contract in Spain
The TETRA LP Block filter underdrain system from Severn Trent Services was selected for use in pre-treatment filtration at a desalination plant under construction in Torrevieja, Spain.
Built by UTE IDAM Torrevieja, a joint venture of Acciona Agua, Acciona Infraestructuras and Romymar, it will initially provide 240,000 m3/day of treated water when commissioned in 2009.
The filter underdrain will form the floors of the rapid gravity sand filters that treat seawater prior to desalination by RO membranes.
In other news, Severn Trent signed a new five-year contract to supply Ajusta bayonet boundary boxes to the UK’s Yorkshire Water Services.
SUEZ wins award
Frost & Sullivan recognized SUEZ Environment with its 2008 Frost & Sullivan Award for Best-in-Class Water & Waste Services in Developing Economies.
The honor cites SUEZ’s contributions in emerging economies of Latin America, Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe. In other news, SUEZ signed a $54 million Gary, Indiana, USA, wastewater contract. It also sent two water experts and four treatment units for China earthquake relief. And its local partner AcwaPower Development won a contract worth $61 million to manage water and wastewater services for the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Field NotesIRELAND: Industrial Development Agency of Ireland celebrated the new IBM Centre of Excellence for Water Management in Dublin. One of its first projects is collaboration with Ireland’s Marine Institute on its SmartBay project, a research, test and demonstration infrastructure for monitoring and managing aquatic environmental data at Galway Bay.
UK: Earth Tech secured a £5 million contract for flood damage repair at a water and waste treatment works in South Yorkshire to commence this summer. In June 2007, Yorkshire Water’s Aldwarke facility was severely affected by floodwater that rose to depths of 2.5 metres across the whole site damaging a number of components, many beyond repair.
ITALY: Almost two-thirds of sub-Saharan Africa’s rural poor could benefit from investment in water, a new UN report finds. The jointly commissioned report, “Water and the Rural Poor,” was presented by the UN Food & Agriculture Organization and International Fund for Agricultural Development at the 16th UN Commission on Sustainable Development held recently in Rome.
ALGERIA: Electrolytic Technologies Corp. won a new engineering and support contract from Sarl les Moulins de Rusicadia (SMR), Algeria, for the supply of a 10 TPD chlor-alkali plant for production of 12.5% sodium hypochlorite. SMR will supply customers sodium hypochlorite in bulk tankers as well as packaged product at this new location.
