Protect Your Pump Station with a Monster

Prior to 2014 the Mosside Sewage Pump Station in Scotland was plagued by unscheduled shut downs, safety hazards for operators and costly equipment repairs caused by an influx of wipes and rags in the collections network. Engineers from Scottish Water looked to a proven, powerful solution in the form of two JWC Environmental Channel Monster® grinders at this problematic site.

The Mosside Sewage Pump Station, with a design flow of 489 m3/hour, has been in operation since 1961. It comprises three submersible pumps that were protected by a manually-raked coarse bar screen. The volume of rags had become so heavy that operators dreaded the frequent cleaning of debris from the screens. The loading was especially problematic during heavy storms when the material would create a “raft” of solids leading to pump blockages and overflows during critical peak capacity periods.

Scottish Water was familiar with the grinder product families from JWC Environmental - a Muffin Monster in channel grinder had been successfully operating at another installation in the area since 2007. For the Mosside station they worked with JWC on a solution that would resolve the rag build-up and pump blockage issues. The solution involved removal of the manual bar screen, upgrades to accommodate high-capacity periods, and the installation of two JWC Channel Monsters.

The installation of the two Channel Monsters in March 2014 has resulted in a massive drop in pump blockages and freed up operators from the constant maintenance.

Graham Black, the area manager for Scottish Water, shared his appreciation for the solution provided by JWC Environmental: “The grinders have made a difference to both our operational and overtime costs, freeing up a lot of our operator time to concentrate on other sites. They have taken away the fear of being called to Mosside time and time again.”
