WARRENDALE, PA, Feb. 3, 2005 -- USFilter is providing the city of Austin, Texas, with 60,000-lbs of catalytic Midas® OCM (odor control media) for its Walnut Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant. The media from USFilter Westates Carbon is loaded into three existing 12-ft diameter vessels that treat exhausts from the plant's headworks. Since coming online a few months ago, the odor abatement systems are helping eliminate hydrogen sulfide (H2S) emissions in headworks exhausts.

Compared to other odor control carbons, the USFilter media has a lower pressure drop and is easier to maintain. In addition, the media's catalytic reaction to convert H2S to sulfur increases the media's H2S loading capacity, which in turn, results in the material lasting for at least two years before requiring replacement. Moreover, the media does not have a dangerous pH problem when spent and, as it is not impregnated, it is easy to handle.

The odor control media's operating costs are lower than those of comparable media. This is largely due to the media's extraordinarily high elemental sulfur storage capacity. The media can also adsorb VOCs as well as acidic gases from the gas stream being treated.

"Midas OCM has revolutionized odor control media," says Dr. James R. Graham, technical director for USFilter Westates Carbon. One of the product's strongest features is its safety in handling during installation, startup and operation, as well as its safety in disposal when spent."

CDM Inc.'s Austin office is the design engineer for this project, and Archer Western Contractors of Arlington, Texas, is the contractor.
