• Industry award recognises need for sustainable development
LONDON -- The Environment Agency has picked up a prestigious commendation from the Royal Town Planning Institute for its publication "Building a better environment - A guide for developers". The three- part guide gives practical advice on how developers can tackle the environmental issues facing their site, including managing flood risk, waste efficiency, water efficiency and avoiding pollution, and how the Environment Agency can help. The Royal Town Planning Institute Awards, which have been running since 1978, are awarded for outstanding group achievement in town and country planning. The Environment Agency faced stiff competition from eight leading organisations to take home a commendation for best publication in the planning processes category at a ceremony held at the London Hilton on 7 February.

• UK valve manufacturer gets ready for CRC
NORTHAMPTON, UK -- Aqua-Gas Manufacturing, the production arm of valves and fittings specialist AVK UK, is taking early action to reduce its (and its customers') carbon footprint. The company is targeting a 10% improvement in its energy efficiency in the twelve months from May 2007 in anticipation of the UK Government's Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC), which will apply mandatory trading of carbon credits to cut emissions. Aqua-Gas is using an online supply chain carbon footprint monitoring system known as CLOEE (CarbonLow Ongoing Emissions Evaluation), which assists the company to allocate data input requirements by department in order to minimise additional workload and issues text or e-mail reminders to upload data for each period.
