SAN MARCOS, CA, Feb. 24, 2009 -- The Vallecitos Water District's (Vallecitos) 40-million gallon underground water storage facility, the Twin Oaks Reservoir No. 2, was recently honored as the Project of the Year from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

The structure was initially nominated in 2007, where it won accolades for being the Outstanding Civil Engineering Project for ASCE's San Diego section. It went on to beat out other award-winning projects in Region 9, which includes the entire state of California.

Construction on the prestressed-concrete structure began in 2005 for the main purpose of increasing emergency and operational storage for Vallecitos. Since its completion in 2007, the Twin Oaks Reservoir No. 2 has been regarded as the largest of its kind in the world.

Combined with the adjacent 33-million gallon Twin Oaks Reservoir No. 1 that was built in 1999, both tanks create a tandem of 73-million gallons of storage. Construction of both facilities became necessary when South Lake -- Vallecitos' lone 75-million-gallon reservoir -- was decommissioned by the State Health Department, as regulations no longer allowed drinking water to be stored in open and unlined reservoirs. Offering insulated, lined and covered alternatives, the Twin Oaks Reservoirs are instrumental to Vallecitos efficiently meeting the day-to-day water demands of its customers.

Along with the Infrastructure Engineering Corporation -- the vendor selected to plan, design and manage the construction of the facility - Vallecitos was honored for their accomplishment at an ASCE awards dinner on Feb. 24, 2009.
