DUBAI, UAE, Oct. 18, 2010 -- Egypt's ambitious Public Private Partnerships (PPP) program is well and truly underway. The Ministry of Finance's PPP Central Unit has already approved a number of construction and infrastructure projects in the North African nation in an effort to boost the country's economy and detract from Egypt's previous tendencies towards protectionist economic policies.
Of the recent swathe of public works projects, water and wastewater infrastructure were highlighted as a key area in which the country wished to boost private sector ownership and operation. Wastewater in particular has developed in leaps and bounds due to large investments of foreign aid over the past ten years. Now, key projects in Cairo and across the country have been opened up to private Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) and public private partnership agreements, including the new residential cities just outside the nation's capital.
Egypt's sanitation and wastewater infrastructure has long been in need of a refurbishment and, to an extent, this has already begun as renovations to ageing wastewater plants have taken place, with a large number of new projects yet to begin.
The Project Manager for the PPP Central Unit's wastewater sector, Eng. Bassel Shoirah, will be discussing the New Cairo wastewater project and the unit's activities in wastewater during a keynote speech at the Wastewater Egypt event which is taking place from 1-3 November 2010 at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Cairo Heliopolis, Egypt.
He will be joined by the sector officer for the Utilities Sector of the PPP Central Unit, Mohamed Tarek, as they discuss the challenges and successes of the government body in wastewater and other infrastructure projects which subscribe to PPP in Egypt.
A general overview of the PPP projects in Egypt's wastewater sector will also be given by the Project Manager for the USAID Water Policy and Regulatory Reform Project, David Osgood. Mr. Osgood will offer a consultant's perspective on agreeing to PPP in Egypt and the exciting prospects for the economic strategy in the years ahead.
