ST. CLOUD, FL, Apr. 19, 2012 -- The City of St. Cloud, Florida, recently contracted with Orica Watercare to purchase its second MIEX® Treatment system. The city's first MIEX® System, which has been operating for the past 4 years, is designed to treat 9 million gallons of water per day at the H. Clay "Junk" Whaley Sr. Memorial Water Treatment Plant. The new MIEX® System, supplied by Orica Watercare, is to treat groundwater at the city's Water Treatment Plant #1.

The 2 MGD MIEX® System uses a magnetic ion exchange treatment process to remove dissolved organic carbon (DOC), color, and sulfide from the water and will reduce odor, improve aesthetics, and, most importantly, reduce disinfection by-product (DBP) formation, allowing the city to attain compliance with EPA standards for DBPs in time for the Stage 2 compliance deadline in September 2013. Performance of the new plant, as demonstrated in pilot testing completed in August of 2009, is expected to mirror that of its 9 MGD neighbor, which achieves a greater than 99% reduction in sulfide, a greater than 60% reduction in DOC, near elimination of the water's color, and compliance with EPA DBP regulations.

At a city poised for future growth, the MIEX® System was designed, in cooperation with consultant Reiss Engineering, to be easily expandable to support an up to 50% increase in treated water demand over the coming years. These years are ones in which Doug Bright, Treatment Plant Superintendent for the city, and his staff anticipates working closely with Orica Watercare to ensure optimal performance of the city's two MIEX® Treatment systems. Under a service agreement, Orica Watercare will provide preventative maintenance visits for the new system's first 18 months of operation. The new water treatment plant is expected to be operational by mid-2013.
