Utility Welsh Water has invested to help reduce surface water run-off into sewers with a signed contract to help manage its wastewater collection and transfer system.

As one of six framework partners, consultancy Black & Veatch will provide wastewater modelling expertise through a three-year framework.

Hydraulic models of wastewater catchments will be built, providing Welsh Water with a live view of current network performance. This data will feed into Sustainable Drainage Plans (SDPs); a vital tool for deriving the utility company’s investment plans for AMP5 and beyond.

It is hoped that the improved visibility will allow for cost-effective investment with design solutions that address limitations and optimise network management. The partnership will identify where surface water run-off can be reduced or eliminated from entering the sewerage network, since this can overload the system and cause flooding.

The approach supports the company’s priorities on surface water elimination and reduction (SWEAR). The framework also forms a critical component of Welsh Water’s long-term strategy to reduce surface water run-off into sewers, and decrease flooding and pollution incidents.
