PASADENA, CA, May 30, 2013 -- DC Water awarded Parsons' Impregilo-Healy-Parsons joint venture (JV) a $254 million design-build contract to design and construct the second portion of the massive tunnel system that will bring relief from combined sewer overflows to the Anacostia River.

The DC Water Board of Directors recently approved the contract -- the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority's second-largest contract to date -- as part of the larger Clean Rivers Project, a $2.6 billion program to reduce combined-sewer runoff to the Anacostia and Potomac rivers and Rock Creek by 96 percent. Named the Anacostia River Tunnel, this portion will be 23 ft in diameter, extend 12,300 linear ft, and will cross under the Anacostia River. It begins at Poplar Point and ends near RFK Stadium. Parsons is a 35-percent shareholder in the design-build JV and is the lead designer.

"We look forward to working with Impregilo and Healy to deliver this important project to the national capital region," said Virginia Grebbien, Parsons Group President.

Jim McDonald, Project Director for the Impregilo-Healy-Parsons JV added, "We are excited to work with DC Water on such an important environmental project in our nation's capital. We look forward to the successful delivery of this tunnel and its accompanying structures."

Construction will start at the north and work south, connecting to the Blue Plains Tunnel in 2017. The design-build contract also includes six shafts and three diversion structures needed as part of the system.
