ALEXANDRIA, VA, May 22, 2013 --The Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF) is now accepting pre-proposals under its 2013 Unsolicited Research Program. WERF develops research that helps enhance our understanding of today's most pressing water quality issues and provides practical solutions to a number of challenges facing wastewater and stormwater programs.

Proposers are invited to submit pre-proposals on topics consistent with WERF's ongoing efforts to advance science and technology addressing water quality issues as they impact water resources, the atmosphere, the land, and quality of life. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, conveyance systems; wastewater treatment; solids management; condition assessment and infrastructure management; wastewater reuse; energy efficiency; decentralized collection and treatment systems; risk assessment and communication; watershed management and water quality; and other emerging issues. Visit WERF's website here to search for a list of ongoing, completed, and planned research, as this will help proposers avoid duplication.

The Unsolicited Research Program supports WERF's mission by funding research projects that can be the catalyst for transforming our understanding of our water resources, our ability to protect and preserve them, and our efforts to minimize impacts on our environment.

"The WERF Unsolicited Research Program selects and funds creative, original, and innovative ideas for applied research while the Solicited Research Program is focused on the shared needs of WERF subscribers and the water quality community. The Unsolicited Research Program taps into diverse, wide-ranging, and brilliant applied research ideas that would otherwise go undetected if we were to focus solely on solicited research," said Raj Bhattarai, P.E., BCEE, WERF Research Council Member and Division Manager Environmental and Regulatory Services Division Austin Water Utility, City of Austin. "I am grateful that WERF continues to fund several unsolicited research projects every year. The program brings freshness and vitality to water environment research."

The call for pre-proposals and complete instructions are available online here. Contact Senior Program Director Amit Pramanik at 571-384-2101 or [email protected] for additional information. All pre-proposals are due in WERF's offices by 5:00 p.m. EDT, Wednesday, July 10, 2013.
