IN water utility to improve customer service, billing with new CIS program

Indiana's Fort Wayne City Utilities will replace its legacy customer information and utility billing solution with a new Advanced Utility Systems CIS.

FORT WAYNE, IN, and TORONTO, ONTARIO, Jan. 22, 2014 -- Fort Wayne City Utilities (FWCU) of Fort Wayne, Ind., has planned to replace its legacy customer information and utility billing solution with a new customer information system (CIS).

Provided by Advanced Utility Systems (Advanced), a division of N. Harris Computer Corporation, CIS Infinity is a new, modern-enterprise-based CIS that addresses evolving operational demands in a cost-efficient manner.

FWCU sought to replace its 20-year-old CIS with one that could help enroll new customers; generate billing; manage remittances and credit/collections; track water consumption; manage and track meters; and handle customer inquiries, complaints, and service orders. Further, the CIS needed the flexibility to support multiple billing structures, rates and frequencies, and enable customer access to a variety of account information.

A department of the city of Fort Wayne, FWCU serves over 100,000 water and sewer customers in and around its municipal limits, covering approximately 80 square miles. Its customer base is comprised of residential, commercial, industrial, governmental, and wholesale customers. The population of the area served by FWCU exceeds 225,000 people. The organization is governed by a three-member Board of Public Works.

In late 2012, FWCU partnered with EMA, Inc., to release a request for proposal for a new CIS. After a comprehensive due diligence process that included detailed demonstrations from qualified vendors and thorough reference checks, FWCU selected Advanced Utility Systems and CIS Infinity.
