WHEATON, IL, Aug. 8, 2014 -- Next month, RJN Group, Inc. (RJN) is set to conclude a flow monitoring study for the city of Memphis, Tenn. The study is needed in order to determine peak flows for the sizing and design of a siphon replacement project that is downstream of an 84-inch interceptor.

The city is also using the flow monitoring to investigate flows downstream of a chemical production facility to determine the impact that city wastewater flows have during wet-weather events in relation to the chemical facility.

For 90 days, Digital Doppler Radar velocity sensors and ultrasonic pulse echo depth sensors collected data by measuring above the flow at the monitoring sites. Due to the potential concentrated chemicals and high water temperatures downstream of the chemical facility, the sensors selected needed to be kept out of the flow.

Accordingly, the high water temperatures create large amounts of steam in the manhole, causing equipment to corrode overtime. RJN carefully monitored the equipment and made frequent site visits to keep it operational.

RJN had previously used these flow sensors for the city on a 96-inch interceptor near the T.E. Maxson Treatment Plant, located in Memphis, Tenn., and knew that above flow AV sensors are a viable option for difficult installation sites.
