The New Mexico Region Sustainability Team from CH2M HILL was recently honored by the Rocky Mountain Water Environment Association with the 2014 RMWEA Sustainability Award for its sustainable wastewater infrastructure efforts in the state of New Mexico.

Sept. 9, 2014 -- The Rocky Mountain Water Environment Association (RMWEA) has honored the New Mexico Region Sustainability Team of CH2M HILL, a global full-service consulting, design, construction, and operations firm, with its 2014 Sustainability Award, which was presented at the RMWEA and Rocky Mountain Section - American Water Works Association annual joint conference held at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M., on Sunday, Sept. 7.

The RMWEA Sustainability Award recognizes wastewater treatment utilities that embrace the principles of sustainability through things such as systems thinking, design practices, management practices, and infrastructure systems that not only sustain the utility but society as well. QAs such, CH2M HILL was presented the award for its sustainable wastewater infrastructure efforts in the state of New Mexico.

In 2009, CH2M HILL's New Mexico six wastewater projects -- Rio Rancho, Farmington, Grants, Las Campanas, El Dorado and Taos -- joined forces and appointed a representative, known as a "Project Sustainability Champion," to plan, design and build a healthy future for the people and businesses in those areas.

The champions meet quarterly, discuss progress they are making towards their continuous improvement and stewardship goals, and share sustainability best practices. Every meeting generates new ideas and plans for future projects. The meetings typically include a community outreach event in conjunction with the team meeting.

The champions also visit a fourth- or fifth-grade class in the community where they are meeting. The team brings an entertaining, hands-on activity that teaches the children about water conservation, water cycles, water pollution, wastewater processing, and other water-related topics. Both the children and champions enjoy their time together, and the children get to pass along their new knowledge to their families.
