Global desalination will account for 35% of the $11 billion membrane market next year, driven by reuse and the necessity for pre-filter systems, according to a market update.

In its latest report - McIlvaine RO, UF, MF World Market – said that the increasing use of ultrafiltration pre-filter systems in conjunction with reverse osmosis (RO) systems is helping to drive the market.

One recent example quoted was the order to BASF subsidiary inge GmbH to supply more than 4000 ultrafiltration (UF) membrane modules for a desalination plant in Jamnagar, India (see WWi story).

The McIlvaine Company credited water reuse as another factor for the high growth rate of the cross-flow membrane industry, referencing the Middle East. It said 40% of treated wastewater is disposed into the seas, which could be economically and efficiently reused.

The Big Question: How will material developments (such as graphene) change membrane desalination in the future? As part of WWi's technology comparison series, we address the topic of membrane material innovation, particularly graphene. Is this material a game-changer for the energy and economic cost of seawater desalination? We speak to Dow, BASF, LANXESS, NanoH2O and Veolia Water & Solutions Technologies to get their thoughts…

Membrane manufacturing: a new chemical romance? Membrane manufacturers have been reliant on commercial polymers developed for a wide variety of applications. Since Dow purchased Filmtec Dow in the 1980s, chemical companies such as BASF and LANXESS have become more engaged in membranes. Able to leverage polymer chemical businesses, will they have clear advantages over traditional membrane companies?
