Case Study: Landmark Canadian building improves sewage O&M with pumping, mixing solution

A landmark building in a Canadian city is now experiencing improved sewage operations after recently installing advanced water pumping and mixing equipment provided by Landia.

Dec. 15, 2014 -- A building serving as a prominent landmark in a Canadian city is now experiencing improved sewage operations and maintenance after recently installing advanced water pumping and mixing equipment provided by Landia, a global pump and mixer manufacturer.

Supplied by Engineered Pump Systems of Port Coquitlam -- who has worked in conjunction with Landia and professional services firm WSP for effective low-flow design -- Landia's chopper pumps and mixers are in operation from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., removing sewage from the cistern serving the third to seventh floors.

During the night, Landia's pumping and mixing equipment quietly removes highly concentrated sewage at a flow rate of just 2.2 liters per second from a 31,000-liter cistern.

Due to a lack of existing sewage capacity, city authorities could only allow the $100-million, seven-story, computer-aided-designed building to proceed with the project if such an overnight wastewater removal system could be securely installed.

Landia's pumping and mixing equipment removes the sewage at a flow rate of just 2.2 liters per second from a 31,000-liter cistern.


"To meet the strict low-flow rate of just 2.2 liters per second that was required for the overnight time slot, we've had to throttle the Landia pumps down substantially with a variable frequency drive (VFD) as part of this complex installation," said Eric C. Pettit, P.Eng, project manager for WSP, who provided consulting services for the project.

"We start the pumps at 100-percent speed and then ramp them down to the restrictive flow rate," he said. "We then ramp them back up to 100 percent just before shut-off to ensure that the pump is clear.

"We are also using an additional Landia chopper pump as a mixer," he continued. "Initially a standard propeller mixer was used, but it was constantly fouling and tripping on overload due to high concentrations of sanitary products that were causing a floating matt problem. It was also causing foaming, which worsened the unwanted surface matt build-up.

"We use the additional Landia unit to pump up and into a manifold so as to create a spray action along the floor of the basin, moving any settled material to the pump suction area," he added. "This also pre-chops the materials, effectively eliminating the chances of jamming when we are running the VFD-controlled pumps to discharge."
