Jan. 29, 2015 -- Several local branches of the American Public Works Association (APWA), a not-for-profit, professional association of public works agencies, private companies and individuals, has honored Baxter & Woodman, Inc. (B&W), a planning, design, construction, and technology services company, with the Technical Innovation Award for its installment of an advanced water pretreatment system at an Illinois village.

B&W installed a patent-pending Barium/Radium Removal Pretreatment System to the Village of Gilbert's existing municipal ion exchange softener regeneration system, which allows cost-effective compliance with new IEPA NPDES limits and IEMA residual disposal regulations. With success in pioneering this new process, the Village and B&W have paved the way for other municipalities to consider a viable alternative to traditional water treatment methods.

The Technical Innovation Award recognizes an individual, team or organization for the development, management and implementation of a creative idea, device, process, or system that enhances the goals of public works in serving the public and protecting the environment. The APWA also honored B&W with two other 2015 Project of the Year Awards for improvements to Round Lake's Hart Road and Sunset Drive as well as Plainfield's Lockport Street traffic signals and sidewalks.

The Project of the Year Award promotes excellence in public works by recognizing the alliance between the managing agency, the consultant/architect/engineer and the contractor who, working together, complete public works projects. All three projects will now advance to compete in the APWA Chicago Metro Area Chapter competition this March.
