March 16, 2015 -- The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada, a non-profit professional association, has awarded the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) with a variety of awards for financial reporting excellence through its open and transparent budgeting program.

During MWRD's Board of Commissioners meeting on Thursday, March 5, Steven Gauthier, director of the Technical Services Center for the GFOA, presented four distinguished awards to the District for its achievements in the field of financials for 2013 and 2014:

  • The Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the 30th consecutive year
  • The Certificate of Achievement of Excellence in Financial Reporting for the 39th consecutive year, which puts MWRD in the top 2 percent of governments receiving a consecutive award in this category
  • The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the 21st consecutive year for the MWRD Retirement Fund
  • The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the 7th consecutive year for the MWRD Retiree Health Care Trust

As the highest form of recognition in the areas of budgeting, accounting and financial reporting by state and local government, the GFOA certificates provide assurance to the MWRD board and management, investors, regulators, rating agencies, and the public that MWRD's financial condition and results of operations are fully and fairly presented.

The certificates also demonstrate that MWRD's budget and Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) is both easily readable and efficiently organized for the readers' benefit.
