The American Public Works Association has awarded its Public Works Project of the Year Award for Small Cities/Rural Communities to Carollo Engineers for its innovative approach to structures, including the West Sacramento Bridge District Water Storage and Park Project.

WALNUT CREEK, CA, May 6, 2015 -- The American Public Works Association has officially awarded its Public Works Project of the Year Award for Small Cities/Rural Communities to Carollo Engineers, a provider of innovative planning, design and construction management services, for its innovative approach to structures, which includes municipal facilities, parks and more, including its efforts toward the West Sacramento Bridge District Water Storage and Park Project.

The City of Sacramento's "Bridge District," located along the banks of the Sacramento River, represents an important future source of economic stimulus and redevelopment opportunities. A new potable water reservoir and a pump station were required to support the area's planned development, but a lack of available land for such a facility required a large aboveground tank. The only feasible location for the facility was a site previously identified for a city neighborhood park, directly across from existing loft-style homes.

The City made the decision to integrate the tank and pump station into the center of the park, celebrating the infrastructure instead of attempting to hide it, and using it as a park theme to indicate the connectivity between water and the community. The Project emphasized the importance of public outreach as a required element of many infrastructure projects. To guide the design and construction phase, Carollo aimed to embrace valuable community elements as an educational outreach opportunity in an effort to inform customers and provide an asset -- instead of a liability -- to surrounding communities.

At the same time, the team conveyed the value of water and provided a continuous outreach opportunity. "We are honored to be recognized with this prestigious award from the American Public Works Association," said Chris Cleveland, project manager, Carollo Engineers. "Inspired by the City's approach to the project, we were able to celebrate the value of water infrastructure, utilize the continuous public outreach opportunity created by the project, and hopefully inspire other utilities looking to convey the value of water to their communities."

The award, established in 2013, recognizes agencies from cities or counties with a population of less than 75,000. This honor aims to promote excellence in demonstrating creativity, ingenuity and efficiency in the delivery of Public Works projects that have profoundly impacted the communities in which they reside.
