ST. LOUIS, MO, Aug. 21, 2015 -- On Saturday, Aug. 22, Missouri American Water (MAW) volunteers are supporting the Open Space Council's Operation Clean Stream -- one of the largest and longest-running river restoration projects in the nation.

The Meramec River is the source of drinking water for about 20 percent of MAW's customers in the southern portion of St. Louis County. The cleanup includes nearly 500 miles of waterway in the Meramec River basin for this event.

Three key locations include:

  • River Clean up - George Winter Park
    207 Allen Rd, Fenton, M, 63026
    Saturday 8 a.m. to noon

MOW is the lead organizer for this cleanup site, which typically draws about 100 volunteers for park and river cleanup and lunch.

  • Passport to Clean Water - Greentree Park
2202 Marshall Rd, Kirkwood, MO 63122
    Saturday 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Passport to Clean Water features interactive water games and fun activities for families who want to learn more about local water resources.

  • River Cleanup - Arnold City Park

    Saturday 8 a.m. to noon.

MAW joins organizers Stream Team 211 in cleaning up the river and park. Stream Team 211 has a long history of cleaning up this site.

In 2014, Operation Clean Stream volunteers pulled 2,481 tires and 250 cubic yards of trash, the equivalent of six large construction dumpsters, from the Meramec River. MAW has provided volunteer and financial support to Operation Clean Stream for more than a decade.
