Biocube's Pentpack biofiltration systems use a patented, compost-based biological media that has proven to be effective in municipal odor control. Shown here is the installation at the North Hutchinson Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Fort Pierce, FL, where a three-stage odor control system treats a difficult mixed-gas odor problem. The company's modular biofilters remove hydrogen sulfide, the primary odor-causing compound.

H2S monitor

Isco has introduced the Advisor™ Purgeable Hydrogen Sulfide Monitor, an instrument that provides continuous sensing of purgeable H2S in wastewater flow streams. The monitor can be used to regulate existing chemical dosing or injection systems to assure cost-effective odor control. Housed in a self-contained NEMA 4x (IP67) enclosure, the instrument's primary output is a 4-20 mA signal for feedback control of the chemical feed pump.

The Duall AroBIOS™ Bioscrubber System, a biological air pollution control technology, removes odors and gaseous contaminants such as ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and other reduced sulfur compounds without the use of chemicals or incineration methods. The systems have a low profile design and use a non-degradeable AroPAC™ biomedia. They are factory pre-assembled with mixed flow exhausters and produce environmentally safe by-products.

Cover system

GTI's structurally supported cover system consists of a sheet of high strength, UV protected, coated fabric tensioned across a series of low profile aluminum arches which span a tank opening. Applications include odor control, blocking sunlight, temperature control, or preventing debris from entering the tank. The fabric cover is sufficiently air tight to allow a ventilation system to function, yet it can be detached on three sides and retracted to expose the tank contents for inspection or maintenance.

Odor neutralizer

Ecosorb® Natural Organic Odor Neutralizer removes a wide spectrum of odors from the air without using fragrances or harsh chemicals. Instead, it uses patented technology to eliminate unwanted odors by neutralizing them, rather than simply masking them. The product is typically diluted with water and sprayed into odorous areas in an atomized mist. The droplets electrostatically attract the molecules that form the odor, then capture and neutralize them, diminishing their volatility until they are reduced to their lowest possible form.

H2S removal

Q2 Technologies' Enviro-Scrub® is a liquid product that scavenges H2S. The scavenged product is soluble, environmentally friendly and helps to reduce corrosion associated with H2S. The product can be applied in wastewater collection pipe lines, gas scrubbers, sludge holding tanks, belt filter presses and centrifuges. Because it is specific for H2S and mercaptans, it is more cost effective than many other removal programs.

Arizona Instrument's new Jerome 860 continuous monitor is designed to track hydrogen sulfide levels. The monitor's electro-chemical sensor is calibrated to measure up to 200 ppm of H2S. It is also capable of measuring sporadic concentration spikes up to 1000 ppm. With minimal maintenance, it measures and stores 100,000 data points, which can be downloaded to either a PDA or a PC through the monitor's built-in infrared port.

By absorption, oxidation and neutralization, compact Pepcon OdorMaster® systems automatically treat malodorous emissions like hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, organic amines and organic sulfur compounds (mercaptans) at most industrial operations with wastewater odor problems. The systems provide on-site generation of sodium hypochlorite oxidant, from salt brine or seawater, which is recirculated through electrolytic cells.

Odor testing

Odor neutralizers #10410 and #10160 from the Odor Control Co. have been used successfully at wastewater treatment plants in various areas (e.g grit chambers, lift stations, digesters, clarifiers and sludge areas). Differences, however, in malodor characteristics prompted the company's chemists and technicians to produce a simple testing system to evaluate non-standard odors and to compound the best odor neutralizer for them.

Odor control

Altivia offers Nitrazyme™ Plus a new proprietary nitrate blend designed to control odor causing sulfides and related malodors as well as prevent the biological generation of sulfides. The product provides a source of bound oxygen (nitrate-oxygen) to naturally occurring facultative anaerobic denitrifying bacteria present in wastewater, which these bacteria metabolize preferentially over alternative sources of oxygen such as sulfate.

The AIRE-O2 Triton® process aerator/ mixer oxygenation and mixing system improves treatment performance efficiencies making it ideal for odor control in urban areas. Additionally, air is introduced and transferred below the water's surface thereby eliminating odor problems associated with surface splashing type systems that generate aerosols. The system also can reduce energy consumption.
