In the past few years, several autonomous low-cost liquid level data loggers have been introduced into the marketplace. These products have made it more affordable to log water level data for diverse, large-scale applications, from CSO monitoring to well draw down reporting. All of these devices, however, suffer from shortcomings that limit their lifespan and increase overall system cost. New technological advances promise to alleviate these shortcomings and make the devices more attractive.

Until now, low cost level loggers have been powered by internal lithium batteries that provide a battery life of about five years, depending upon the logging rate. After the battery is depleted, this type of logger is rendered useless because the battery is not replaceable or rechargeable. Some models can be powered from the surface after the battery has expired, requiring additional expenditures.

Now available from Keller, the DCX-ECO level loggers use new accumulator power cell technology to provide a low-cost yet rechargeable liquid level logger. The accumulator cell is automatically charged via USB connection during data retrieval (~100 mAh) or can be charged via an optional AC adapter (~800 mAh). With a fully-charged accumulator cell, the logger can be operated for up to three years, depending upon logging rate.

Another shortcoming common to previous low-cost liquid level loggers is their lack of venting to atmosphere. For certain applications, the sealed (a.k.a. absolute) configuration is preferred, even though a separate logger for barometric pressure must be employed. But for most level logging applications, a vented style logger is preferred, enabling real-time, automatic compensation for changes in barometric pressure. This eliminates the need for a separate barometer, thereby lowering the overall system cost.

For this reason, the DCX-ECO is available in vented as well as absolute versions. In addition, an optional attached cable can be fitted to the logger, enabling data retrieval at the surface without disturbing the logger.

At only 18mm (0.71inch) diameter, the DCX-ECO will fit into tight spaces, including most driven wells. It is a versatile choice for CSO monitoring, road overwash warning, well drawdown and any other application requiring a self-powered, autonomous liquid level logger.

Keller's level and pressure monitoring systems will be on display at WEFTEC '08. More information also can be found at the company's website, www.kelleramerica.com.
