Product Focus - Renewing Rainwater: Mobile Stormwater Solution Helps Municipalities Preserve Storm Drains, Water Resources

Dec. 9, 2013
More recent approaches to stormwater management strive to provide on-site stormwater quantity reductions and improvement of the stormwater quality. As such, the Storm Regen® mobile unit from Environmental Business Solutions is an on-site treatment solution that services pretreatment drains prior to outfall.

According to a study by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), larger cities on the west coast are spending almost $2 million annually on stormwater cleaning and maintenance.

Most traditional approaches to stormwater management focus on displacing rainwater to an off-site location. This site-specific solution, however, does not address the downstream issues of wastewater discharge into local waterways or the increase in processing costs to public works.

Through the use of best management practices (BMPs) and state issued NPDES permits, more recent approaches to stormwater management strive to provide on-site stormwater quantity reductions and improvement of the stormwater quality. Further, regular stormwater maintenance plays a vital role in ensuring the proper operation and effectiveness of any solution.

As such, the Storm Regen® mobile unit from Environmental Business Solutions (EBS) is an on-site treatment solution that services pretreatment drains prior to outfall. During a regularly- scheduled system cleaning, original liquids are regenerated and returned to the original vessel. The result is minimal point source water disturbance and maximum receiving water protection from wastewater pollutants, while limiting a client's risk during transport to an off-site location.

Storm Regen is a patent-pending, two-phase separation (liquids and solids) process where solids are vacuumed using a second pump and directed to a separate holding tank of contaminated wastewater that can be added to by extra catch-basin waste and does not need to be disposed of until the tank is full.

The remaining contaminated wastewater is disposed of at a significantly reduced cost and liability than current traditional solutions allow. Following separation, the Storm Regen liquid filtration and regeneration process occurs, and the previously contaminated water is recycled and reused. The entire process takes less than five minutes.

The technology is ideal for facilities with multiple stormwater applications, such as municipalities or large campus facilities. The expectation is that this system will provide stormwater system cleaning services more efficiently than current solutions and reduce travel impacts related to conveying the liquids offsite.

Oftentimes with regard to maintenance, little thought is given to observing performance of the system. But it's important to note that lids, grating, traps, interior weirs or dividers, filter device condition, and terrain can impact the system. EBS provides on-site evaluation to provide accurate BMP recommendations as required by local regulations and prevent unexpected charges resulting from unreported stormwater equipment failure.

Environmental Business Solutions also offers a complete electronic compliance packet from start to finish. Its "Post Packet Document" (PPD) exceeds all Storm Water Pollution Control Program (SWPCP) minimums.
