Push-to-Talk Communications Software Connects Radios to Smartphones on a Budget

Communications software provider Twisted Pair offers a suite of push-to-talk (PTT) software applications that enable interoperability among and between nearly all network and device types, including two-way radios, smartphones and tablets, desktop PCs, and more.

The WAVE Mobile Communicator enables smarter push-to-talk by extending radio systems to new devices, such as smartphones, and connecting them with any other type of system over existing broadband networks. This device interoperability removes boundaries to instant, enterprise-wide PTT voice communications. With the communicator, a smartphone operates as a multi-channel radio handset, sending and receiving secure audio to any other communication device.

This ability to bridge the gap between all device and network types allows utility providers the flexibility to continue to use existing radio systems and have smartphone and device capability. Working with whatever systems are already in place, WAVE saves enterprises time and money by not requiring an infrastructure overhaul or the purchase of any new equipment. Workers can use whichever devices they already carry or prefer to communicate with all other users at the push of a button.

Interoperability between systems lets mobile workers, engineers, managers, operators, and even third-party vendors and partners connect instantly regardless of device type, location or job function. A worker can use his or her radio handset, for example, to reach back-office staff operating on desktop PCs. Managers can key into operations and maintenance while off-site using their smartphones, while outside vendors can easily join enterprise PTT channels using whichever devices are at hand.

The WAVE application suite includes both Private Call capability and Group Call mode. With Private Call mode selected, users can enjoy secure, one-to-one PTT capability with any other member of a WAVE system. Once the Private Call is complete, either user simply hangs up and the device returns to its pre-call state. Workers and supervisors can then quickly switch between group and private PTT modes depending on the nature of their conversations.

WAVE software offers a secure, reliable replacement for carrier push-to-talk networks such as Sprint's iDEN, which was decommissioned at the end of June 2013. WAVE servers residing in an enterprise data center, in a cloud environment or, if needed, on an individual PC, manage audio processing, management and distribution. Twisted Pair offers its own cloud service, WAVE Connections, which subscribers can access over any carrier or Wi-Fi data network.

By maximizing interoperability and flexibility of device choice, WAVE software ensures that industry workers and managers get the right information right when they need it. Water and wastewater enterprises can achieve true, enterprise-wide PTT and enhanced efficiency of operations, all while conserving costs by avoiding any hardware upgrades.
