Utility Severn Trent Water has contracted MWH Global to install a new Lime plant as part of a £34 million scheme to update the Bamford Water Treatment Works and meet future raw quality challenges.
Supplying drinking water to Derby, Nottingham and Leicester, the new lime plant, which is backed up by the UPS systems installed by Harland Simon UPS, will control the pH profile throughout the entire treatment process, replacing the existing Lime and Kalic dosing plants.
To meet the needs of both MWH Global and Bamford Water Treatment Works, Harland Simon UPS designed, tested and fitted their largest UPS from the Harland ProtectUPS - Industrial range, which comprised of a two tonne unit with fans and filters fitted into an IP54 enclosure.
The Harland ProtectUPS is a range of power protection systems that safeguard against any mains power failure, particularly those that are subject to harsh or unmanned environments.
The system has been designed specifically to provide long-term protection within harsh environments that are subject to temperature extremes, vibration, water ingress, dust and dirt all built into IP rated enclosures.
In the event of a power cut, the system switches to backup batteries without interrupting the power, ensuring there is no disruption to normal service. On restoration of a company’s power, the system automatically switches back to mains power and begins to re-charge the batteries.
Rob Kirk, senior technician, maintenance and operations Buxton WRW area, Severn Trent Water, added: “The processes backed up by the UPS systems are critical. If the site lost power for even a short amount of time, there would be huge damages to the processes, and possible large financial losses, not to mention big impacts to the supply of drinking water to many areas in Derbyshire. It’s therefore vital to have a constant supply of power, which is what the UPS solutions from Harland Simon pMWH Globalrovide.”
Jonathan Croshaw, senior electrical contract engineer, MWH Global, said: “As well as supplying UPS systems to the Severn Trent Water site, including the large 120kva UPS that supports the existing Lime plant, it also came to our attention that there was a service agreement in place between Severn Trent Water and Harland Simon UPS to maintain the UPS systems and provide continuous UPS support.”
