Our History

WaterWorld was established in 1985 by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) to serve the growing informational needs of professionals in the municipal water and wastewater sectors. From its inception, the magazine has focused on covering the full spectrum of water industry topics—from drinking water treatment and distribution to wastewater collection and compliance.

In 1991, the publication became part of PennWell Corporation’s water group, expanding its editorial scope and cementing its reputation as a leading voice in the water industry. Through insightful reporting, technical features, and expert commentary, WaterWorld has helped generations of water professionals stay ahead of regulatory changes, technology trends, and operational best practices.

In 2018, PennWell Corporation was acquired by Clarion Events. Subsequently, in 2019, Clarion divested several PennWell media brands, including WaterWorld, to Endeavor Business Media. This transition allowed WaterWorld to continue its legacy under new ownership, embracing a renewed digital-first strategy while maintaining its commitment to the industry.

During this period of change, longtime editor-in-chief Angela Godwin led the publication until her departure. The editorial helm was then passed to Alana Maya before the current editor-in-chief, Mandy Crispin, stepped in in April 2023 under the direction of Water Group Editorial Director Bob Crossen.

Today, WaterWorld covers the full spectrum of drinking water issues, while Wastewater Digest — another legacy brand with a history dating back more than a century — focuses on wastewater. Though the two brands maintain independent websites, their combined editorial strength is reflected in the WaterWorld print magazine, which now features content from both publications.

For more than 40 years, WaterWorld has remained a vital resource for engineers, utility managers, plant operators, consultants, and policymakers. We’re proud to support the professionals who keep our most essential infrastructure flowing — and we’re committed to informing and empowering them for decades to come.
