Ceramic membranes
Hyflux Ltd. has launched its second-generation hollow fiber ceramic membrane. The InoCep membranes combine the simplicity and compactness of polymeric hollow fiber membranes with the hardiness of ceramics, making it suitable for highly demanding applications that involve high temperatures, pressures, and/ or aggressive solvents. Exploiting the characteristics of improved Al2O3, the membrane is capable of sustained filtration in temperatures of up to 120 deg. C and is able to withstand the full range of pH values (from 0 to 14). Another key feature is its hollow fiber configuration, which has the ability to filter from both "inside-out" and "outside-in". Its crossflow configuration also reduces fouling drastically, ensuring longer operating durations and less down time.

Seawater desalination
Toray Industries, Inc. and Toray Membrane USA have introduced two new models for seawater desalination, the TM820S-400 and TM820V-400 reverse osmosis membrane elements. TM820S-400 has low energy consumption (9,000 gpd at 800 psi) with high boron rejection (90% at pH 8). TM820V-400 also has the same low energy consumption but higher boron rejection (92% at pH 8). Toray also offers two low fouling models of TM720N-400 and TML20N-400 brackish elements. TM720N-400 offers low delta pressures and low fouling by using a 34 mil spacer. TML20N-400 with 34 mil spacer also demonstrates fouling resistance and can be applied to waters with higher suspended solids.

Brackish water RO element
The optimized design of the DOW™ FILMTEC™ BW30XFR-400/34i creates a high rejection and high productivity element to purify waters with biological and organic fouling tendencies. Incorporating the company's proprietary BW30XFR membrane sheet, the RO elements allow demineralization and other water treatment systems to operate more consistently with less cleaning and maintenance. The module maintains reliable system integrity due to the iLEC™ technology (interlocking end-caps), which minimizes the risk of o-ring leaks that can contribute to poor water quality.

Membrane Bioreactor
The Norit Airlift™ Membrane BioReactor (MBR) is a compact purification system that combines the biological degradation process with a membrane separation process. This combination offers several significant advantages over a conventional activated sludge system, including higher biomass concentration and less sludge carryover. The higher biomass concentration results in a more compact system. The decrease in sludge carryover reduces the need to post-treat the effluent. The system uses an ultrafiltration membrane solution that is placed outside the bioreactor. This offers a simple and easy to maintain stand-alone system that is fully enclosed and does not expose the operator to fumes or sludge.

Brackish water treatment
Hydranautics has announced its enhanced LD (Low Differential pressure) Technology™, which is being used for two new spiral wound brackish water products, CPA5-LD and ESPA2-LD. LD Technology™ is a culmination of new advancements in biofouling and colloidal fouling reduction, and in the cleanability of these spiral elements. It consists of improved, more robust polyamide chemistry, innovative spacer geometry design to minimize the trapping of small colloidal particles, and enhanced chemical properties to minimize the proliferation of bacteria in the element. The result is longer element life, reduced chemical and labor costs associated with cleaning, and less system down-time.
In a recent plant study, the CPA5-LD had approximately 2 bar lower differential pressure (1 bar versus ~3 bar) for most of the 250 day test, compared to conventional style elements. Additionally, the number of Clean in Place (CIP) cleanings was drastically reduced, from 5 to 0 during the 250 day test.
